# Easy-start system

A starter mechanism that uses a spring between the recoil rope and the crankshaft to store the energy of a slow pull and release it in one burst, turning the engine over for you. Manufacturers market it under names such as SmartStart, EasyStart or Soft Start.

The value of a spring-assisted starter is that it removes the sharp, forceful pull that older two-strokes demand, which matters for anyone with shoulder or back problems and for saws started many times a day. It does not fix a saw that is genuinely hard to start: flooding, a stale fuel mix, a dirty air filter or a worn plug will still defeat it. The assist spring is a wear part and can break, usually announcing itself as a rope that pulls through with no resistance at all. Battery saws sidestep the whole question, since they start on a trigger.
