The class of user a saw is built for: consumer, semi-professional or professional. It summarises the duty cycle the machine is designed to sustain rather than any single technical measurement.

The classes differ in things that rarely appear as numbers: bearing quality, air filtration, ease of field service, magnesium versus polymer crankcases and the expected hours before a rebuild. A consumer saw used occasionally on firewood may outlast a professional one used daily, so the class describes intensity of use rather than quality in the abstract. Buying above your class is mostly a question of paying for durability you will not consume; buying below it shows up as overheating, premature wear and frustration. It is the choice that shapes almost every other characteristic of the machine.
