# Limbing

Removing the branches from a felled tree to leave a clean trunk. It is normally worked from the base towards the top, cutting the branches on the far side of the trunk so the stem stays between the saw and the operator.

Limbing produces more injuries per hour than felling because it involves many small cuts in awkward positions with the bar nose constantly near unseen branches — the classic kickback setup. Keep the trunk between you and the bar, use the trunk itself to rest the saw body where you can, and treat every branch as potentially loaded: springpoles under tension release with real force. Watch also for branches supporting the trunk's weight, since cutting one can roll the whole stem onto you. Working uphill of the trunk on a slope is a habit worth forming.
