Manufacturers size it against the fuel tank so both run dry together, giving you a natural reminder to check both at every refill — get into the habit of filling oil first. Running the saw with an empty oil tank ruins a bar and chain very quickly, so it is worth confirming oil is reaching the bar by holding the nose near a clean surface at part throttle and looking for a thrown line of oil.
