# The Best Chainsaw for Firewood: Size, Bar and Models

Cutting firewood is repetitive bucking, not felling, and that changes which specifications matter. This guide explains the 45-55 cc sweet spot and names the models that fit each scale of use.

## What cutting firewood actually asks of a saw

Most chainsaw advice is written around felling. Firewood work is a different job. Once the tree is down — or once a load of logs has been tipped in the yard — everything that remains is bucking: cutting stems into stove-length rounds, again and again, for hours. A round is typically 20 to 40 cm across and 30 to 50 cm long, and a single cord means well over a hundred cuts.

That shifts which specifications matter:

- **Cut cycle, not cut reach.** The saw makes short crosscuts into wood far narrower than the bar. Extra bar length buys nothing here and costs weight, chain drag and sharpening time.
- **Sustained load.** Bucking holds the engine near full throttle for long stretches with few pauses. Cooling, air filtration and tank capacity matter more than peak power figures.
- **Weight carried all day.** A 1 kg difference is invisible on a spec sheet and very visible after the fourth hour.

## Why 45-55 cc with a 40-45 cm bar is the sweet spot

Below roughly 45 cc, a saw has to be fed slowly through a 35 cm oak round. It will do the job, but the cut takes longer, the engine spends more time in the load band where it heats up, and the operator ends up pushing — which is how chains get dull and cuts get crooked.

Above roughly 55 cc, the extra displacement stops helping. The rounds are still 30 cm; what you gain in cut speed you pay for in weight. The [Stihl MS 311](/en/stihl/stihl-ms-311/) is 59.0 cc and 3.1 kW, but it also weighs 6.26 kg without bar and chain — against 4.8 kg for the [Stihl MS 251](/en/stihl/stihl-ms-251/) at 45.9 cc. Lifting the heavier saw onto a sawbuck two hundred times is a real cost.

The 40-45 cm bar follows the same logic. It clears a 40 cm round in a single pass from one side, which is all a firewood saw ever needs to do. Manufacturers agree: the MS 251 ships with a 45.7 cm bar, the [Husqvarna 445S](/en/husqvarna/husqvarna-445s/) with 45 cm, the [Echo CS-4010](/en/echo/echo-cs-4010/) with 45.72 cm.

Manufacturer use classes back this up too. Stihl files the [MS 271](/en/stihl/stihl-ms-271/) under **Farm/Firewood** and describes the [MS 291](/en/stihl/stihl-ms-291/) as a saw for harvesting firewood; Husqvarna describes the [450S Rancher](/en/husqvarna/husqvarna-450s-rancher/) as a landowner saw for felling, cutting, limbing and cutting firewood.

## A few cords a year

If you burn a stove for evenings and weekends and process wood that someone else delivered, a 40-46 cc saw is enough.

The [Husqvarna 435](/en/husqvarna/husqvarna-435/) is the lightest sensible option at 4.44 kg and 1.64 kW, with a 40 cm bar and a 0.325 chain. Its published maximum bar is 45.72 cm, which is worth knowing: fitting anything longer overloads it. The [Echo CS-4010](/en/echo/echo-cs-4010/) is close in displacement at 41.6 cc but ships with a 45.72 cm bar and weighs 4.26 kg, with a 0.349 l fuel tank and a 0.231 l oil tank — that ratio matters, because a firewood saw empties its oil tank roughly as fast as its fuel tank.

The [Stihl MS 251](/en/stihl/stihl-ms-251/) sits at the top of this group: 45.9 cc, 2.2 kW, 4.8 kg, 45.7 cm bar. Stihl classes it for homeowners and light-duty work but describes it explicitly as a firewood saw. The [Craftsman CMXGSAMY42N8](/en/craftsman/craftsman-cmxgsamy42n8/) covers similar ground at 42 cc with a 45.72 cm bar.

## Heating a house

If the stove is the primary heat source and you cut several cords a season, move up to the 50-56 cc class. The gain is not top speed — it is that the saw is no longer working at its limit, so it runs cooler and holds its cut rate through a long session.

The [Husqvarna 450S Rancher](/en/husqvarna/husqvarna-450s-rancher/) is the reference point: 50.2 cc, 2.4 kW, 4.99 kg, 50 cm bar, 18.51 m/s chain speed. The [Husqvarna 445S](/en/husqvarna/husqvarna-445s/) is the same weight and displacement with a shorter 45 cm bar and 2.2 kW — the better choice if your rounds are consistently under 40 cm. The [Stihl MS 271](/en/stihl/stihl-ms-271/) matches at 50.7 cc and 2.6 kW but is noticeably heavier at 5.6 kg, and the [Makita EA5001PREL](/en/makita/makita-ea5001prel/) delivers 2.9 kW from 50 cc at 5.4 kg with a 0.47 l fuel tank.

Step up once more only if you are also felling or cutting hardwood over 45 cm. The [Stihl MS 291](/en/stihl/stihl-ms-291/) (55.7 cc, 2.8 kW, 5.6 kg) and the [Husqvarna 455 Rancher](/en/husqvarna/husqvarna-455-rancher/) (55.5 cc, 2.61 kW, 5.99 kg, 3/8 chain, 20 m/s) are the usual answers. The [Echo CS-590 Timber Wolf](/en/echo/echo-cs-590-timber-wolf/) at 59.8 cc and 5.99 kg, with a 0.645 l tank, is built for the same farm-and-ranch duty cycle.

## When a battery saw is enough

Battery saws now cut firewood properly, with two conditions: the wood is already down and stacked near an outlet, and you work in sessions rather than all day. Runtime, not cutting ability, is the limit.

The [Husqvarna 435i](/en/husqvarna/husqvarna-435i-battery-and-charger-included/) is the clearest fit — Husqvarna lists it for light landowner work including cutting firewood — at 1.79 kW, 40.6 cm bar, 21.01 m/s chain speed and 2.7 kg, which is 1.7 kg lighter than the petrol 435. The [Husqvarna Power Axe 350i](/en/husqvarna/husqvarna-power-axe-350i-battery-and-charger-included/) takes a longer 45.7 cm bar at 3.5 kg, though its 11.8 m/s chain speed is roughly half that of the 435i, so cuts are slower. The [Greenworks 80V 18 in](/en/greenworks/greenworks-80v-18-chainsaw-2ah-battery/) pairs a 45.72 cm bar with 2.0 kW and 20 m/s at 4.08 kg. Also worth comparing: the [Makita XCU04PT](/en/makita/makita-xcu04pt/) (40.64 cm, 20.0 m/s, 3.76 kg), the [Stihl MSA 220](/en/stihl/stihl-msa-220/) (1.7 kW, 40.6 cm) and the [EGO CS1610](/en/ego/ego-cs1610/) (40.64 cm, 20 m/s).

The noise difference is the underrated argument. The 435i is rated at 90 dB(A) sound pressure against 102 dB(A) for the petrol 435 — a 12 dB gap, and in noise terms that is a very large one.

## What to avoid

- **A long bar on a small saw.** A 50 cm bar on a 40 cc engine cuts slower than a 40 cm bar on the same saw and stresses it. Check the published maximum bar length before buying a longer one.
- **Buying on displacement alone.** The [Husqvarna 460 Rancher](/en/husqvarna/husqvarna-460-rancher/) is 60.3 cc with a 60 cm bar — excellent for felling, more saw than bucking rounds requires, and 5.99 kg to hold up all afternoon.
- **Top-handle saws.** The [Husqvarna T525](/en/husqvarna/husqvarna-t525/) and similar T-series models are designed for arborists working one-handed from a rope. They are not ground-level firewood tools.
- **Ignoring the oil tank.** Long continuous bucking is the hardest duty cycle there is on bar oil. A saw whose oil tank runs dry well before the fuel tank will need topping up mid-tank.
