How to Choose a Chainsaw: A Practical Buyer's Guide
A beginner's route through the decisions that actually determine which chainsaw you need: the job, the power source, the bar length, and the weight you can still hold up after two hours.
Start with the job, not the saw
Most disappointing chainsaw purchases begin the same way: someone picks a model, then works out what to do with it. Reverse the order. Four jobs cover almost every buyer, and each points at a different machine.
Occasional firewood. A few loads a season, logs already on the ground, cutting within sight of the house. You need enough power to bury a 40-45 cm bar in seasoned hardwood without the chain bogging down, and very little beyond that. The Stihl MS 251 sits squarely in this bracket at 45.9 cc, 2.2 kW and 4.8 kg, and the intended use recorded for it in our database describes a saw "for homeowners and light duty work".
Property maintenance. Storm cleanup, limbing, cutting back overgrowth, the occasional small tree. Here weight matters more than raw output, because a lot of the cutting happens at or above waist height and the saw is picked up and put down all day. The Echo CS-310 at 30.5 cc and 3.99 kg, or the Makita EA3200SRBB at 32 cc, 1.3 kW and 4.08 kg — filed in our data under the intended use "occasional user" — are the shape of saw this job wants.
Felling and land clearing. Standing timber, larger diameters, hours of work at a stretch. Now displacement earns its keep. The Husqvarna 455 Rancher runs 55.5 cc and 2.61 kW with a 50 cm recommended bar and a 61 cm maximum; the Echo CS-590 Timber Wolf offers 59.8 cc against a 60.96 cm maximum bar.
Tree work off the ground. A separate category, not a bigger or smaller version of the others. Top-handle saws are built to be operated one-handed by a climber on rope: the Echo CS-2511T is 25 cc and 2.36 kg, the Husqvarna T540XP Mark III 39.1 cc and 3.81 kg. Both are recorded in our data as professional arborist tools. If you are not a trained climber, this is not your category.

Petrol still wins on sustained output per kilogram, and it is the only source that does not care how far you are from a charger. The cost is noise, vibration, fuel mixing at 50:1 and a carburettor that will eventually need attention.
Battery has moved well past the toy stage. The Husqvarna 540i XP is recorded at 1.79 kW and 2.9 kg with a chain speed of 24.1 m/s and a sound pressure level of 95 dB(A) — a genuinely professional set of numbers, and quieter than any petrol saw in our database. At the domestic end, the EGO CS1200 pairs a 30.48 cm bar with a 20 m/s chain speed at 3.81 kg, listed for "light-duty brush removal, limb work". Between them sit tools like the DeWalt DCCS674B — 1.79 kW, 35.56 cm bar, 23 m/s — and the Makita XCU03PT, classified "Professional/Commercial".
Mains electric is a narrow category and our database holds few of them. It makes sense only if all your cutting happens within a cable's reach of a socket.

Bar length follows from the job
The rule that saves beginners money: the bar should be roughly 5 cm longer than the widest wood you cut regularly. A longer bar is not a free upgrade: it adds weight at the far end of the saw, needs more power to drive the extra chain, and pushes more of the kickback zone out of sight.
Manufacturers publish two figures and our database stores both. The recommended bar length is what the saw is set up to pull well; the maximum is what will physically fit. The Husqvarna 435 lists 40 cm recommended against 45.72 cm maximum, and the Echo CS-310 35.56 cm against 40.64 cm. Fitting the maximum on a small engine gives you a saw that is slower in every cut, not a bigger saw.
At the other end, the Husqvarna 564XP Fuel Injected records a 38.1 cm recommended bar and a 71.1 cm maximum — it can carry a very long bar precisely because it has 4.03 kW behind it. The full reasoning is in the bar length guide.
Displacement and weight pull against each other
Displacement buys you power, and power comes with mass. Compare three petrol saws from our database:

Going from the 435 to the MS 311 nearly doubles the power and adds 1.8 kg. That is the trade in its simplest form, and whether it is worth it depends entirely on how long you hold the saw up: 1.8 kg is nothing for two cuts and a great deal for two hours of limbing.
Weight figures here are as the manufacturer publishes them, normally the powerhead without bar and chain. Cordless models are the awkward case: makers are inconsistent about whether the pack is counted, so compare cordless weights across brands with caution.
The safety features worth insisting on
Four things are not optional, whatever the budget: an inertia chain brake that stops the chain on kickback, a chain catcher under the powerhead, a throttle interlock so the trigger cannot be pulled accidentally, and a low-kickback bar and chain combination unless you have specific reason to run something more aggressive.
Beyond that, two published numbers predict how tiring a saw will be over a full day. Vibration at the handles is measured in m/s²: the Husqvarna 435 records 3.1 front and 3.8 rear, while the Husqvarna 455 Rancher records 3.8 and 6.9 — a real difference over a morning's work. Sound pressure is measured in dB(A): 102 for the 435, 107 for the 455 Rancher, 89 for the battery-powered Husqvarna 225i. All three call for hearing protection; the gap between them is the difference between annoying and genuinely hostile.
None of this replaces chaps, boots, gloves, a helmet and eye protection.
A short decision checklist
- Name the job in one sentence, and the largest diameter you cut regularly.
- Pick the power source from that sentence — cutting away from power and for hours means petrol; everything else is now open to battery.
- Set the bar length at roughly your largest diameter plus 5 cm, then check it is at or below the manufacturer's recommended figure, not just the maximum.
- Pick the smallest displacement that comfortably drives that bar. Extra cc you do not use is extra kilograms you carry.
- Confirm the chain brake, chain catcher and throttle interlock, and read the vibration and dB(A) figures before you commit.
