How the Husqvarna chainsaw range is organised

Husqvarna's range reads as two number series crossed with two power sources. The 400 numbers are the homeowner and landowner saws, the 500 numbers are the professional ones, an i in the name means battery, and a T in front means a top-handle saw for tree work. Several battery models appear twice, once as Tool Only and once as Battery And Charger Included; that is the purchase configuration, not a different saw.

Petrol, home and land

The 435 (40.9 cc, 4.44 kg, 40 cm bar) and 440 (40.9 cc, 45 cm bar) cover home maintenance. The Rancher and landowner group steps up on a shared 50.2 cc platform: 445S (4.99 kg, 2.2 kW), 450S Rancher (2.4 kW, 50 cm bar) and 450X Rancher (2.54 kW). Above them the 455 Rancher (55.5 cc, 5.99 kg) and 460 Rancher (60.3 cc, 60 cm bar) take on felling and firewood.

Petrol, professional

The 500 series trades weight for output. 545 Mark II and 550XP Mark II share 50.1 cc but differ in power, 2.68 against 2.98 kW; 550XP G Mark II is the same engine at 5.58 kg. Larger still: 555 (59.8 cc, 3.1 kW) and 564XP Fuel Injected (62.4 cc, 4.03 kW, 5.8 kg), the most powerful saw listed here.

Petrol, top-handle

T525 (27 cc, 2.7 kg), T435 (35.2 cc, 3.4 kg) and T540XP Mark III (39.1 cc, 3.81 kg) are the climbing saws, all on 30 cm bars. Their ground-handled sibling 540XP Mark III shares the 39.1 cc engine at 4.1 kg.

Battery

Homeowner battery: 225i (0.82 kW, 3.1 kg), 435i (2.7 kg, 40.6 cm bar) and Power Axe 350i (1.42 kW, 3.5 kg, 45.7 cm bar). Professional battery runs 535i XP (1.42 kW, 2.4 kg), 540i XP (2.9 kg), 542i XP (1.79 kW, 3.1 kg) and 550i XP (3.2 kW, 4.0 kg), with top-handle versions T535i XP, T540i XP and T542i XP at 2.4 to 2.9 kg.

Reading a Husqvarna model number

Four elements do almost all the work.

The hundreds digit is the series. 400 numbers are homeowner and landowner saws, 500 numbers are professional. Inside each series the following digits climb with the engine: 435 and 440 are 40.9 cc, 445S and the 450s are 50.2 cc, 455 Rancher is 55.5 cc, 460 Rancher is 60.3 cc. The same holds on the professional side: 545 and 550 are 50.1 cc, 555 is 59.8 cc, 564XP is 62.4 cc.

XP marks a professional saw and i marks battery power; in this data every XP model is classed professional and every i model runs on a battery.

T in front means top-handle, a saw for working in the tree. It is why T540XP Mark III weighs 3.81 kg against 4.1 kg for the otherwise matching 540XP Mark III.

G is heated handles. The 550XP G Mark II carries the same 50.1 cc and 2.98 kW as the plain 550XP Mark II and weighs 0.27 kg more.

The rest is easier. Mark II and Mark III are generations of the same saw. Rancher names the landowner line. Where an S and an X share a number, the X is the higher-output one: 450S at 2.4 kW, 450X at 2.54 kW.
